Photography:

All photography featured on this website has been originated by Jim Murdoch. Sometimes the images are just observations, a quirk of the light or a new perspective, some are more considered. Their job in this context is to flatter the text and hold your interest in the website.

I am currently working on large format photography project using obsolete Polaroid instant film. As we all now experience ‘instant photography’ so routinely using digital cameras, I thought it would be interesting to go back to the more considered approach demanded by working with a large format camera. Using Polaroid film also gives an (almost) instant image, which is also unique - an idea at odds with photography as a whole.

I’m interested in producing a high-value image that is not necessarily even considered as a photograph by the viewer. I have copied some sample images on this page. The pictures have not been treated to any post production in Photoshop, the treatment of the perspective and textures come from changing the relationship of the lens to the film plane within the camera and the use of aged film stock, respectively.

I hope to hold a mini-exhibition of large format Polaroid images later in the year. In the meantime I’m more than happy to compare notes, or just chat with anyone on the subject of large format photography or photography in general for that matter. Of course I’m also interested in commissions using Polaroid film, particularly portraits or interiors.
