Welcome to the JMCS website. JMCS is a coverall trading ID for me, Jim Murdoch. Offering ‘creative services’ allows me flexibility in and around my core activities of creative writing, copy editing and foreign language translation. It allows me to be known as ‘that bloke that does…’ rather than ‘Jim the translator’ or ‘Jim the copy editor’, which can be rather exclusive titles.

So how come I’m so creative and why would you want to offer me work?

Well briefly then… In my work as a ‘localiser’ of computer game software, the localisation process often calls for a readjustment of the product and a different pitch for a given market. This can require renewed original creative treatment within the game, re-recording characters’ dialogue in the target language, possibly modifying graphics in-game and in the various paper parts, such as the manual and packaging and more. There’s a whole raft of creative processes, which need to be initiated and managed. This is where my experience comes from.

As a translator too, you’re only as good as your command of your mother tongue and decent writing skills are essential. Working in computer games saw me commissioned to write an 85K word novelisation of a computer game, which was published in the mainstream by Penguin Books. I routinely translate marketing and packaging copy for computer and video games. I’ve also managed recording sessions with BBC sports commentators and worked with voice talent in Germany and France, recording trolls, secret agents and tank commanders… This 2007 iteration of JMCS comes after a lay-off period, bringing up a young family as a single parent. I hope you enjoy looking at the website and see some opportunity where we might be able to work together.
